03 · No logo

No logo.

Why we removed the brand from the brand.

WNBS is the first and so far the only project that dismisses the visual presence of its own brand on its products. There is no “WNBS” tag on the chest. The Good Luck Charm doesn't even feature the web address.

The selected word has been chosen by the individual. Therefore the presence of the WNBS brand is redundant. People who know that the word is always black on white or white on black — and now also black on black and white on white — know. This is the Wannabe Society principle. And it is this form, reduced to extremes, that is sufficient for identification with the brand.

There will always be products with only one word on the surface. Yet to identify with the manufacturer, the brand must also be placed somewhere around the word. We chose not to. We decided the wearer was enough.

Due to this concept — which primarily respects the chosen word of the individual — WNBS dismisses its logo and therefore becomes even more recognisable in the deluge of branded products. The absence is the brand. The wearer is the design.

How to recognise an original WNBS product

Two ways.

  1. The word is in Helvetica Regular, all caps, black on white or white on black. That's the rule. Anyone breaking it is breaking it on purpose.
  2. The label has a silver sewing thread. That's the authenticity mark. The silver thread is the only place WNBS leaves its signature, and you have to be wearing the shirt to find it.

The wearer is the design.
